The name "Hospice" was chosen to reflect its meaning as "a place where weary travelers may rest." The construction of the facility was made possible through a large bequest from Fred Dugan, a former Hormel treasurer, who saw a need in Austin for a retirement home that would offer beauty, purpose, and dignity to the lives of its residents, as well as quality health care services.
Today our skilled nursing facility, serving 59 residents, continues in that tradition. In 1983 and 1984, Sacred Heart's services were expanded to include an Adult Day Program and Home Health Care. These three community-based programs provide options for health care that enable individuals to remain in their own homes as long as possible and allow Sacred Heart to serve many more people in the Austin area.
